Pottery questions we’re always asked

Is Google Business Profile free for pottery studios?
Yes, completely free. Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free service that any legitimate local business can claim and manage. There is no cost to create, verify, or maintain your listing. Google also does not charge for appearing in the Local Pack (the map results at the top of local searches) — that placement is earned through profile quality, relevance, and reviews, not paid for. The only paid Google placement is Google Ads, which is separate.
How long does it take for a pottery studio to show up on Google Maps?
After claiming and verifying your Google Business Profile, your listing typically appears in Google Maps within 24–72 hours. However, appearing prominently in the Local Pack (the three studios shown at the top of local search results) takes longer — usually 4–12 weeks — as Google needs to assess your listing's relevance and quality relative to other local studios. Building reviews, posting regularly, and ensuring your listing is complete all accelerate this process.
Why is my pottery studio not showing up on Google Maps?
The most common reasons: your listing hasn't been verified (unverified listings don't appear in search), your listing has been suspended (often due to keyword-stuffing in the business name), a duplicate listing exists that's diluting your presence, or your listing is too new and hasn't built enough signals yet. Check your GBP dashboard for any alerts or warnings. If your listing is verified and complete but still not appearing, the most likely cause is that nearby studios have more reviews and stronger local signals — focus on building reviews and posting regularly.
Should I add keywords to my pottery studio's Google Business Profile name?
No — this is a common mistake and against Google's guidelines. Your business name in GBP should be your actual trading name, nothing more. Adding keywords like 'Sheffield Pottery Classes Studio Workshops' to your name field can result in your listing being suspended. Google already knows you offer pottery classes based on your category, description, and services — you don't need to repeat it in the name. Keyword-stuffed business names are also obvious and off-putting to potential students.
How many photos should I add to my pottery studio's Google listing?
At minimum, 10–15 photos across different categories: studio interior, classes in session, finished student work, your kiln, and exterior/signage. Listings with more photos receive significantly more views and booking clicks than those with few or no photos. Add new photos regularly — Google gives a small ranking boost to listings with recent photo activity. Phone camera photos taken in good natural light are entirely adequate; you don't need professional photography.
Can I get my pottery studio removed from Google if I don't want it listed?
Yes, you can mark your listing as permanently closed or request removal through GBP support. However, Google sometimes auto-creates listings for businesses it finds online, and these can reappear after removal. If you've closed your studio, mark it as permanently closed rather than trying to delete it entirely — this prevents confusion for anyone who finds the old listing. If you're operating but don't want a public listing (e.g. home studio with no public access), you can hide your address while still showing a service area.
How do I get my pottery studio into the Google Maps top 3?
The three studios in the Local Pack are chosen based on relevance (does your listing match the search?), distance (how close is your studio to the searcher?), and prominence (how well-known and active is your listing?). You can't control distance, but you can improve relevance and prominence: complete every section of your GBP, use the correct category (Pottery Studio), add all your services, build reviews consistently, post at least once a month, and ensure your website's NAP matches your GBP exactly. In competitive cities, this may take 3–6 months of consistent effort.
