Studio atmosphere
Planet Janet Ceramics is run by Janet "Jan" Morgan, a ceramic artist based in South Wales and a quarterfinalist on The Great Pottery Throwdown series 7, which aired in January 2024. Jan makes quirky, original thrown, hand built and augmented functional ware and ornaments featuring aspects of nature and fantasy creatures, with dragons, chickens and other creatures appearing regularly in her work. She works mainly in white earthenware decorated with coloured underglazes, slips and oxides, using techniques such as sculpting, carving and sgraffito to bring her collection to life. Alongside her own making, Jan shares the joy of working with clay and the wellbeing it brings through hands-on, in-person workshops and classes, welcoming everyone from complete beginners to those wanting to develop their skills.
Classes & programs
Planet Janet Ceramics offers a range of hands-on experiences. Half day throwing taster sessions run for three hours and can be booked one to one, as a couple or as a small group of up to four people. Couples sessions offer a two hour throwing introduction, ideal for a date night or shared wellbeing experience. Six week beginners pottery throwing evening classes provide comprehensive tuition in preparing, wedging, centering and throwing on the wheel, plus turning, finishing, adding foot rings and handles, and a range of decoration techniques from underglazing to slips, oxides and sprigs. Hand building workshops are held at Saron Hall in Bynea and bookable via Eventbrite, with rotating makes such as decorate your own mug, fairy houses, tea light holders, sgraffito for beginners, coiling, house signs and seasonal Halloween and Christmas specials. Mobile workshops and private clay parties can be booked for groups of up to eight people at a venue of your choosing.
Schedule & availability
Taster sessions and couples sessions are arranged for a mutually convenient time by email. Six week beginners and development throwing classes run one evening or afternoon a week, currently a Tuesday evening class (6:30pm to 8:30pm) and a Wednesday afternoon class (1:30pm to 3:30pm), with four places available per six week run. Hand building workshops at Saron Hall have new dates added to Eventbrite monthly. Classes are non refundable once booked, and early booking is recommended as spaces are limited.

Wheel throwing and hand building classes are held by appointment at Jan's home studio in Bynea, near Llanelli, with parking available and wheelchair access. Village hall hand building workshops are held at Saron Hall in Bynea. All taster sessions and classes include the equipment, materials and instruction required, plus bisque and glaze firing of two completed pieces of your choice (additional pieces to be fired incur an extra charge). Mobile workshops and private clay parties can be delivered at a location of your choosing anywhere in South West Wales.

Half day (three hour) throwing taster sessions are £85 for one person, £150 for two, £225 for three and £300 for four, including materials, instruction and firing of two finished pieces. Two hour couples sessions are £100 per couple. Six week beginners pottery throwing evening classes are £180 per person, including all materials and equipment plus bisque and glaze firing of two completed pieces. Hand building workshops at Saron Hall are booked and priced via Eventbrite. Private clay parties and mobile workshops are quoted on request. Any additional pieces to be fired incur an extra charge, and classes are non refundable once booked.
