Studio atmosphere

The Hive Makerspace is Hereford's dedicated paint-your-own pottery studio, run by the wonderfully welcoming Eloise. Located in the characterful Bastion Mews, tucked inside the Old Music Shop, it's a relaxed, creative space where the atmosphere is calm and inspiring. Customers regularly describe it as therapeutic — a proper escape from the everyday. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned crafter, you'll feel right at home.

Classes & programs

The Hive is exclusively a paint-your-own pottery studio — there is no wheel throwing or hand building here. You choose a piece from the studio's collection (mugs, plates, lighthouses, seasonal specials, and more), then paint your own design with full guidance and all materials provided. Evening 'Paint & Sip' sessions are available for adults (6:30–8:30pm), where you're welcome to bring your own drinks. Private group bookings are also available for hen dos, birthdays, and team events.

Schedule & availability

Sessions are bookable online up to one month in advance and run throughout the week, including weekends. Each session includes approximately 1.5 hours of painting time, plus arrival, setup, and a short tutorial. If you need extra time to finish a piece, you can return within a month for a £5 studio fee. The studio operates on a workshop-and-collection-only basis — walk-ins are not available.

Facilities & tools

The Hive provides all painting materials, tools, and equipment needed for your session — no need to bring anything. A selection of teas and soft drinks from Bird & Blend is available to order at your table. Once you've finished painting, your pottery piece is kiln-fired in-studio and ready to collect within approximately 2–4 weeks. Gift vouchers are available to purchase online.

Pricing

A £10 deposit per person is required at booking, which covers a £5 studio fee plus £5 toward your pottery selection. Pottery pieces are individually priced depending on what you choose to paint. One non-painting guest per group can attend by paying the £10 deposit, with their £5 pottery credit transferring to another painter in the group. Gift vouchers are available to buy online.

Best for

The Hive is perfect for anyone looking for a fun, creative session in a relaxed and supportive environment. It's especially popular for date nights, hen parties, birthday celebrations, family days out, and solo creative time. Eloise is known for being patient and approachable — she's happy to sketch out designs for those who don't feel confident drawing. The studio has also been praised as a great sensory experience for neurodivergent visitors.

FAQs

Do I need any experience to paint pottery here?

Not at all. The Hive welcomes complete beginners and all abilities. Eloise provides guidance throughout and is happy to sketch out designs if you're not confident drawing.

Is this a wheel throwing or hand building studio?

No — The Hive Makerspace is exclusively a paint-your-own pottery studio. You paint pre-made bisqueware pieces rather than working with raw clay.

How long does a session last?

You'll have approximately 1.5 hours of painting time, plus arrival, setup, and a short tutorial at the start. If you need more time to finish, you can return within a month for a £5 studio fee.

When can I collect my finished pottery?

Your pottery is kiln-fired after your session and is typically ready to collect within 2–4 weeks. Expedited options may be available — contact the studio for details.

Can I book for a group or private event?

Yes! Private group bookings are available and The Hive is a popular choice for hen dos, birthday parties, and team events. Get in touch via hello@thehivemakerspace.co.uk to enquire.

Are drinks available during the session?

Yes — a selection of teas and soft drinks from Bird & Blend is available to order at your table. Evening Paint & Sip sessions (adults only) allow you to bring your own alcoholic drinks.
